The Drake Equation, conceived in 1960 by Dr. Frank Drake, is used to calculate the likely number of extraterrestrial
civilizations residing in the Milky Way galaxy.

The Drake equation is a formula which takes into consideration such factors as rate of star formation, the amount of
those stars that have planets, and progresses to the length of time a civilization will attempt cosmic communication.

N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy advanced enough to where communication is possible.

R* = the average rate of annual star formation in the Milky Way (or any one galaxy)

fp = the number of those stars formed that have planets in orbit

ne = the average number of those planets on which life can form

fℓ = the fraction that do develop life

fi = the fraction that progresses to intelligent life

fc = the fraction of civilizations that develops the ability to communicate into space

L = the length of time that the above civilizations actively and continually send communications into the universe

Using the above formula, Dr. Drake was able to determine that approximately ten civilizations exist at any one time in
the Milky Way.  Other researchers, using more current data have calculated vast numbers of possibilities, with N
equaling more than 5,000!
