The U.S. and U.S.S.R. have been experimenting with nuclear powered aircraft since the end of WWII.  In May of 1946,
the Nuclear Energy for the Propulsion of Aircraft (NEPA) Project was started by the Air Force.  Studies under this
program were done until May of 1951, when NEPA was replaced by the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (ANP) Program.
The ANP Program included provisions for studying two different types of nuclear powered jet engines, General Electric’
s Direct Air Cycle and Pratt & Whitney’s Indirect Air Cycle.

If two of the most powerful countries in the world have been experimenting with nuclear propulsion for the last 50
years, then it should not be too hard to believe that any experimental aircraft flying around trying to achieve “out of
this world” flight characteristics probably has nuclear fuel on board.

A Geiger counter should be one of the first pieces of equipment an investigator must have
in their inventory.  It’s remarkable that no one ever thinks of radioactivity at the crash site
of a flying saucer.

Of course, we really do not know what kind of technology these visitors from outer space
have, but what if it’s actually one of ours that has crashed and spread radioactivity all over a
large area?  It would be our responsibility to warn the public and protect the lives of our
investigators.

Geiger counters measure gamma rays.  Gamma rays have the smallest wave lengths and the
most energy of any other wave in the electromagnetic spectrum.  These waves are
generated by radioactive atoms and by nuclear explosions.  Gamma rays kill living cells, a
fact which medicine uses to its advantage to kill cancerous cells.

There are a few supply companies that offer Civil Defense
Geiger counters for the public.  The cost is very low for
this important piece of safety equipment.  For around 45
dollars, you can buy a new Geiger counter that is ready to
go.  Of course, check around for the best deal and make sure that the one you are going to purchase can be
calibrated for use.  Some of the companies are selling this equipment as “historical artifacts”.  Make sure it is in
working condition before you buy it.  Of course, we do not have any nuclear waste lying around to test it, so use
your judgment.  There are usually detailed instructions that some along with the product.

JFS has a detailed list of products that every investigator should have.  Check out the UFO TOOLS in
INVESTIGATORS CORNER.  Please let us know of any products that you think will benefit the investigator.
