I would like to touch on the basic fundamentals of a professional UFO investigation...

Try to contact the witness
as soon as possible.  If a witness has to wait a couple of weeks before an investigator
calls him, he may think his sighting is not important to the investigator or the company he is working for.

Before calling the witness,
review the case for important questions to ask and any inconsistencies in the witness
statement.  {Do not tell the witness you think his case is a hoax. If it is a hoax, that will be determined after all the
information is compiled and evaluated}.  Do not jump to conclusions.

Study the area within a 20 mile radius by local maps or Google Earth.  Make notations of local airports, lighthouses,
nuclear plants, military bases, coast guard bases and anything that could contribute to strange lights in the area.

I feel it would be a great tool for investigators if we could annotate
all the sightings from our MUFON case file, on
MUFON’s Google Map format.  I think it would be of a greater benefit if this could be presented on a state by state
basis, so all an investigator would do is zoom in on their state to see every sighting from the past and present.  This
will give an investigator an overall look at UFO activity in the area. Maybe each state could create their own custom
mapping system.

It seems that 9 out of 10 sightings are investigated over the
phone or sometimes by e-mails. Of course the investigator
has to make a determination as to whether he should drive
out to the sighting area or not.  I recently made a rookie
investigators mistake by judging the witness before I had all
the facts in hand.  After reviewing all of the pictures the
witness took with his digital camera, I had a very different
opinion of his credibility.
Do not jump to conclusions until all
of the information is in.

Traveling to meet the witness of a recent encounter
encompasses many
things to prepare for.  Set up an arrival
time to meet the witness.  Study your maps and do not get
lost. Bring all of the info that pertains to the case.  Look
presentable and have your proper credentials.  I recently
purchased a special investigators badge from a reputable
police accessories and uniform company.  I had to provide
proof that I worked as an investigator for MUFON.  I had the
badge made with my I.D. number and MUFON Special
Investigator on it. I feel it represents MUFON as a reputable
investigative organization. Do not forget to show your MUFON
I.D. too.
Try to fill in all the blanks on the MUFON CMS before you meet the witness.  You can always change things before
you close out the case.  This will leave you all the time for looking over the area and questioning the witness.
Always let the witness do the talking. He may remember many things that were not in his original report.  Be
prepared for the unexpected.

Your investigators travel kit should have all the things you need for a local UFO investigation.  Common sense will
help you figure out what you need, plus MUFON’s list of
essential equipment is the best guide for a proper
investigation.  Camera, compass, binoculars, flashlight, cell phone, maps, appropriate attire for the case in question
and make sure you let someone know {wife, husband or a note on the refrigerator} where you are going and when
you may be back.

Sometimes you may have to contact the local police in the area. It’s best to
uphold the law in local rural
communities than to trespass on someone land chasing or simply investigating a UFO.  If I found a stranger on my
land and he told me he was looking for flying saucers, I would probably call the police or the funny farm after I run
into the house to get my gun.  If you have to climb over fences, make sure the owner of the land knows about it,
especially at night.  I would hate to be shot as a trespasser.

Investigating over the phone seems to be the norm.  After filling out all the info on the MUFON CMS form, make
sure you attach all of the pictures taken and I also suggest an aerial view of the area from Google Earth.  A picture
says a thousand words.  I have learned a lot from our MUFON investigators by
reviewing the cases on the CMS
system.  I guess you have to customize your own style of investigation as long as it conforms to MUFON’s
standard of professionalism.

If you realize that a lot of sightings are concentrated in a specific area of your state, point this out to your State
Director.  It may be necessary to
hold a town meeting in that region.  This will bring the flying saucer
phenomenon to the attention of the local public and hopefully the media {local newspaper and TV news media}.  I
am sure many people      will come forward and report many sightings from the past and present.  You have to
realize that millions of people do not believe in UFOs and millions don't even want to think about UFOs.  This can be
a very scary subject for many people young and old.  Respect their opinions.  I feel it is our duty to inform the
public about the “possible      disclosure” that we are not alone in this universe. This will ease the shocking news
when it’s released that aliens are real.
